Hi there!
It
was a pleasure for me a few months ago to become a member of the Cretan
Animal Welfare Group. For many years I had heard about its actions and
experiences from people whose animals had been helped. I also knew about
the difficulties such societies face since the problems are numerous and
their only ally is their power of will and the love they have to offer
the animals.
But none of the negative
things stopped me of taking over the Subsidized Neutering of Owned Dogs
Project. A project which, thanks to two very generous ladies and their
companies, is covering the full microchip costs and 50% of the neutering
costs for owned dogs from Sissi to Heraklion! Furthermore, WSPA is
providing us with the needed guidance and after the population survey
training we received from them, we are ready to show people that we are
making a difference!
With great satisfaction I can see that the project is gaining more and
more success. From October 07 until January 08 28 dogs have been
neutered, 18 of which were females. Taking into consideration only the
females and assuming they would have lived approx. 5 years each,
bringing into the world an average of 10 puppies each per year, we have
prevented 900 unwanted puppies from a suffering and uncertain future and
helped the owners get out of an unpleasant situation. We are hoping to
neuter an average of 15 dogs per month and at this rate it should take
us 2 years to have neutered all the female dogs in the areas of Malia
and Stalis.

Another positive outcome
is that we are having increased positive reactions from the local people
who, in the beginning, were very conservative and skeptical about
neutering their dogs!
We are now waiting for you, the rest of the dog owners, to contact us as
soon as possible, to assure a better future for your dogs!

Subsidised
Neutering Project
Until the end of 2007 CAWG is offering
100% of the cost for neutering and micro chipping to dog owners in the
areas of Malia and Stalis. This project is being funded by a very
generous donor who wishes to remain anonymous and WSPA is providing all
the support and advice needed.
We intend to prevent the problem of stray
dogs and unwanted puppies, at source by offering financial help and
educating the public on all the positive aspects of neutering their
dogs.
From our survey it was evident that when
someone owned 2 or more dogs, the cost of neutering became an issue.
However, for single dog owners, they argue that neutering is not
natural. So, we are now posing the question is it really natural to
throw the puppies in the rubbish ?
Advertising materials such as pens,
lighters, leaflets and stickers are widely distributed and you may see
our members in the special tops with the CAWG and Project logo on them.
The press conference to initiate the
project took place in Heraklion, September 10th and despite being caught
in the elections hype, it was a success.
End of the year update! 15 dogs
have been neutered and micro-chipped and there are many more on the
waiting list for 2008 when 50% of the cost will be covered by CAWG. We
have also had a generous donation to cover certain costs of ''out of
area'' calls for neutering.
